Longqing Gorge Ice Sculpture and Lantern Festival

Entrance to the Longqin Ice Festival.

We took a tour of Longqing Gorge on Saturday January 4th, 2012 located 1 1/2 hours north of Beijing.

Main hall entry to the Ice Sculptures.

We went in the evening, and witnessed an outdoor gallery of massive blocks of ice carved into animals and figures of all shapes and sizes.

Enormous Snow Dragon.

Illuminated at night it created one of those rare must-see-to-experience visuals.

Sepia and Max with our Spanish friends, Antonio and Paulina at the festival.

The mountains around the gorge were also illuminated, forming a smaller replica of the Great Wall. It was a beautiful background for the Ice Lantern Wonderland in the middle basin.

The longest escalator in the world according to the Guiness Book  of World Records, a toboggan run, and crazy artificial flower cave added to the festival’s fun.

This was the 26th year of the festival and they used LED lighting for the first time on all lights and lanterns.

Chilly Family!

There were over 400 ice sculptures made by both Chinese and foreign artists.
